Crime Stoppers New Student Ambassador Program in Houston, Texas
Crime Stoppers of Houston is excited to partner with Houston City Council Member, District A Brenda Stardig in a joint effort to promote and sustain safety in schools through a new Student Ambassador Program. The main goal of the program is to increase safety awareness on campus, give students a voice and encourage them to get active.
Through this new program, Crime Stoppers of Houston will partner with an already established school organization, such as a student council, and has pledged to make a one-hundred dollar donation to that student organization for every tip that results in a solved case at their school. The students’ involvement will be rewarded so that it’s a win-win for everyone!
The pilot program will launch in middle and high schools of Spring Branch Independent School District during the current 2015-2016 school year and is made possible because of funding provided by Houston City Council Member Brenda Stardig.
“My involvement with Crime Stoppers dates back to the early 1990’s having worked on several campaigns with them and I am very excited to see this new program positively impact the safety of many students in our schools. The success will happen because we are showing students that we care and that they are loved.” says Council Member Brenda Stardig.
The Crime Stoppers’ Safe School program has become a model for the nation and is the only program that is solving and preventing crime in a manner that students of all ages are responding to; it is also offered completely free to the students and satisfies Texas State mandates. Since 1997, the program has solved over 2,000 school cases and removed almost 300 weapons from our schools.
“We are in the schools, and the kids trust us, but we needed to do more. We wanted to give them ownership of this crime prevention and public safety message. We wanted to make sure that when we left the schools the saftey message remained, so we created this program to establish student ambassadors. By partnering with school groups they will have a voice when we are not there.” says Rania Mankarious, Crime Stoppers Executive Director.
