Crime Stoppers in Action – September

During the month of September, we put extra focus on raising awareness about animal cruelty. Through various media channels and numerous events we diligently reached out to the community at large to educate about that serious topic. Beyond emphasizing how to keep our four legged friends safe we didn’t miss any opportunity to engage Houstonians on the importance of school safety, domestic violence prevention and the fight against crime in our city.

The first week of September we talked to Houston listeners on the Roula and Ryan Show on 104.1 KRBE and joined a discussion on the KHOU Great Day Houston Show about how to cope when kids leave for college including their safety while they’re away (You may watch the show at full length here).

On September 13, we were honored to host the Unity For A Solution general membership meeting to discuss Houston’s animal welfare problem including ‪animal cruelty and how it relates to other violent crimes such as domestic violence and organized crime.

The following week was marked by a visit to the KBXX 97.9 The Box and Boom92 Houston studios, the Great Day Houston’s Law Enforcement Show, a morning with City Council Member Brenda Stardig at Cox Media Houston highlighting our NEW Safe School Program Ambassador Program, and an interview with Chris Nocera from ABC 13 Houston to discuss the danger of disguised phone apps (watch the interview at full length here).

On September 22, we had the privilege of meeting with students and teachers at YES Prep Public Schools North Central to talk about topics such as cyber bullying and teen dating violence (pictured above).

September 25 was a busy day with a presentation at Lyons Elementary on how to be safe online including “the truth about online predators”, followed by our “First Responder Appreciation Night” with country artist Mo Pitney hosted by Stampede Houston and The New 93Q. We were so honored to be chosen as the beneficiary of this event!

Last but not least, we highlighted our September focus with an eye-opening and engaging Safe Community Seminar “What is Animal Cruelty” held in partnership with Houston PetSet. Speakers from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Houston Humane Society and Barrio Dogs talked about animal cruelty, dog fighting, and ways to prevent the suffering of animals. Apollo from Adore Houston made that event a very special one.

Our continuous efforts to keep Houston safe pay off. Three of the animal cruelty fugitives that were sent out during the month turned themselves in! Additionally, on September 24, a case which had been featured by KPRC Channel 2 the week before was solved thanks to an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers of Houston. The suspect was identified and an arrest/charges were made!

On August 26, 2015, a tipster called the Crime Stoppers Call Center to report that this suspect is currently living in Glendale, Arizona. Two days later the tipster followed up and provided the suspect’s cell phone number. On September 1, 2015, the suspect was taken into custody by the Glendale PD based on the information provided by the tipster in this case. The suspect got arrested on a warrant executed for Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child (<14 YOA). HE IS OFF OUR STREETS NOW!
