Crime Stoppers in Action – June/July

At Crime Stoppers, we understand that your safety matters at all times of the year, including the summer time!  June and July were busy months with a special focus on Summer Safety. Through speaking engagements and fairs, as well as through our website and social media, we educated the community on important safety tips related to heat safety, water safety, travel and home safety, as well as fireworks and camping safety. If you missed this information, you may visit our Resource Center at www.crime-stoppers.org/resources/resource-center. It’s never too late to educate yourself!

We kicked off June with a presentation at the Harris County Department of Education about our FREE Safe School Program being offered to K – 12th grade students and met with the Asian Community at the Houston Police Department Information Exchange as part of the Safe Community Program.  Later in the month, we were excited to attend the Emancipet Houston’s Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting with Mayor Annise Parker, Mayor Pro Tem Ed Gonzalez, Council Member Robert Gallegos and Council Member Michael Kubosh.  Crime Stoppers Executive Director Rania Mankarious had the pleasure of meeting with Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman who we partner and work closely with to keep Harris County safe (Pictured above).

In July, we enjoyed a great Saturday at Hidalgo Park with our friends at Barrio Dogs, Inc. educating the community about animal cruelty. On July 29, we hosted another FREE Safe Community Seminar on “How to Survive an Active Shooter” that provided important information and a valuable contribution to our community’s safety, especially in light of the active shooter tragedy in Lafayette, LA. And with the new school year approaching, we began our outreach efforts to get us ready for our Back to School Back to Safety Campaign. We are so fortunate to have the support of many media partners, including The Buzz Magazines (magazine covers pictured below), who dedicated two articles to the Crime Stoppers Safe School Program. If you haven’t already read them, please take a few minutes to do so here – http://ow.ly/QimTN and http://ow.ly/Qin0m.

    • 28 tips – Solved felony cases
    • 102 tips – Executed felony warrants
  • Arrested 92 suspects
  • Solved/executed 130 cases

  • Paid 88 anonymous informants

Below is one of the cases solved by Crime Stoppers in June:
On June 29, 2015, an armed robber walked up to a woman shopping with her 4 year old child, mid-afternoon. The suspect demanded the keys to her vehicle. She hesitated, probably out of shock. The suspect then POINTED THE GUN AT HER CHILD’S CHEST. She immediately handed over the keys and the suspect fled in her vehicle. Crime Stoppers sent out a press release looking for this dangerous individual and our friends at ‪ABC-13 Eyewitness News covered the story. Within two weeks, tipsters helped us identify and locate the suspect and charges were subsequently filed. The suspect was a SERIAL ARMED ROBBER who targeted retailers and their shoppers.  NOT ANYMORE!

During the months of June and July, the Crime Stoppers:

  • Solved 1 school – based case (possession of drug Marijuana)

Over the summer, we had the pleasure of meeting with most school districts in the Greater Houston Area to discuss their safety plans for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year.  Districts take school safety very seriously and behind the scenes have been working hard to ensure that all students receive the best education in the safest environment.

Based on our conversations, we prepared a Back to School Safety Guide to better prepare parents for the upcoming school year. Download the guide now!
