Crime Stoppers in Action – May

OUR IMPACT IN MAY 2015

Did you know that for every case of elder abuse and neglect reported to authorities, experts estimate that as many as 23 cases go undetected? For this and many other reasons, we focused our May outreach efforts to talk to the community about elder abuse and educate on what each of us can do to help. We believe it is everyone’s duty to help prevent abuse, neglect and financial scams involving our senior citizens.

We kicked off the month at the Annual Spindletop Golf Tournament which supports our Safe School Program through its fundraising and distributed important crime prevention information at the District A Movie Night with Council Member Brenda Stardig. Both were lovely community events and we were delighted to be a part of them!

On May 4th, Safe School Program (SSP) Manager Michelle Sacks spoke to students and faculty at Yes Prep about internet safety and actions they can take to report crime. This was one of the 32 presentations she delivered in the month of May. Additional visits include 3 days of presentations at The Village School, a sit down with Girl Scout Troop 18020 St. Jerome Catholic School who came to the Crime Stoppers office to learn about cyberbullying to be able to present the information at their school, and on May 19th facilitated probably our most exciting and interactive SSP presentation at Austin Parkway Elementary with our friends Roula, Ryan, Producer Eric and Special K from 104.1 KRBE. Check out cool photos on our Twitter account.

The Mommie Series Houston selected Crime Stoppers as a beneficiary of their Summer Edition educational series on May 6th and on May 7th ED Rania Mankarious was honored at the Lights Camera Action International Mother’s Day Soiree, which also gave back to our mission.

We were honored to welcome the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to our offices for the 2015 Harris County Peace Officers’ Memorial Ceremony on May 7th. Over 300 people attended to honor and remember law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. A special tribute and dedication was made to HCSO Dep. Jesse “Trey” Valdez, III who was killed in a vehicle accident in October of last year.

On May 14th, we held our Annual Awards Luncheon at Hotel ZaZa Houston which raised over $88,000 towards our mission programs and with the help of emcee Dave Ward, ABC-13, honored five local heroes in crime prevention.  More than 375 guests, including keynote speaker Scott McClelland, President of H-E-B’s Houston Division, joined in the festivities. Click here to see full highlights and photos from our luncheon.

Later in the month, members of our staff met with Mayor Annise Parker and the Houston Area Council on Human Trafficking.

We look forward to sharing where we’ve been in June!
