2022-2023 School PSA Video Contest

Crime Stoppers of Houston and the FBI Houston Citizens Academy Alumni Association (CAAA) have partnered to host a Public Service Announcement (PSA) video contest for Houston-area high school students. The 2022 – 2023 #SeeSomethingSaySomething campaign aims to educate the public about the seriousness of threats to life and bringing awareness to the unfortunate reality students and school staff are faced with daily on campuses.

In addition to educating school staff, students, and community members about what threats to life looks like in the everyday home, neighborhood, and school, the campaign also seeks to inform students and the public on the severity and repercussions of these actions as well as how to ask for help and report.

The team PSA submissions should address one or all of these campaign focal points:

How risk factors can contribute to violent behavior
Red flags (online or in-persons) that preparators display that are warning signs of doing something harmful or threatening to others
Psychological and emotional consequences for victims and bystanders
Legal consequences for perpetrators actions and involvement
How to report Threats to Life and the importance of advocating for yourself and others

Educating the Public - Threats of Life

Threats to life is any complaint (online, verbal, or written) that contains information of a threat to human life, seriously bodily injury, or significant violent action.

10.5% of Houston Area high school students carried a weapon on school property within the last 30 days prior to the survey
6.3% of Houston Area high school students were threated or injured with a weapon on school property one or more times within 12 months prior to the survey
36.9% of Houston Area high school students felt sad or hopeless almost every for 2 or more weeks in a row that interfered with their usual activities within the 12 months before the survey
10.5% of Houston Area high school students were electronically bullied and
12.5% of Houston Area high school students were bullied on school property within the 12 months before the survey

Often times, there are risk factors that contribute to violent behavior. They are linked to experiencing repeated or prolonged stress and can negatively change the brain development of youth. Risk factors could include:

Exposure to violence and conflict in the family
Social exclusion and isolation
History of trauma
Lack of involvement and low commitment

A teacher must sponsor high school students who wish to take part. Teams of one to four students must register online and must submit a 45-60 second original video.

1. The contest is open to all Houston area high school students in grades 9-12. Each team will consist of ONE TO FOUR STUDENTS and a TEACHER SPONSOR who will assist the team as needed and be responsible for submitting all contest forms and the video PSA entry.

2. Entries must be 45-60 seconds (including credits) and only contain original and non-copyrighted material. No copy-written music, branded material, logos, etc., may be used without express written permission for the copyright or trademark holder. Please utilize technology to mask logos or names of corporations that may appear in the video, unless specific permission is granted to use logos or company names.

3. All team members must not attempt to include or perform video stunts, dangerous situations, or film at dangerous locations during the production of the video. The Teacher Sponsor will guide teams through the planning and filming / submission process, in order to ensure safety and security for all students involved in the project.

4. The screening committee reserves the right to disqualify any submission for any reason deemed necessary. Submitted videos will not be eligible if they contain or appear to contain:
a. Profane or obscene material or language
b. Nudity, profanity, or gratuitous violence
c. Endorsement of illegal drug use, alcohol abuse, prescription drug abuse, or any other illegal activity
d. Derogatory characterization of any person or group
e. Any copyrighted or trademarked materials without express written consent form the copyright or trademark holder
